Cows with flower crowns & DIY tutorial!

Jul 16, 2017

Happy Sunday buddies! I wanted to share with you guys a minute the thought process of Katie. AKA, crazy town๐Ÿ˜€. While we were in St. Marten *moment of silence* I was in the market, and actively searching online for a farm-y outfit. I'm not talking bib overalls and a straw hat, I'm talking chic, you dig? When of course, I was looking on my all-time bargain go-to bestie for the resite site, Amazon. I saw this shirt, and it was one of those moments like, "you and I were meant to be together" So of course, I bought it, it was amaze. It took a while to get to my house, but when it did, it was worth the wait. It was a cow with a flower crown! I have a soft spot in my heart for anything cow related. I shared in one of my earlier posts about growing up on a farm and my grandfather was a dairy farmer. So anytime I find something that reminds me of my roots and childhood, I lunge for it. Y'all, this is the cutest shirt ever, other than my own shirts of course, @southerngoldapparel ๐Ÿ˜‡ #shamelesspromotion.

So, when I got the shirt, I thought, I wonder if I could make a flower crown? Then, I went and bought some flowers from the good ol' teeter and brought em' home. Next, I attempted to make a flower crown, and I gotta say, it turned out pretty darn cute! Now, I have no need for a flower crown, I have no plans of taking/being in ethereal photos anytime soon that would lend to a flower crown. I don't adorn flower crowns on my head in my everyday wardrobe of yoga pants and t-shirts. So why did I make this flower crown? I just wanted to see if I could do it. Anybody else out there like that? You just want to try something to see if you can do it. You know, prove it to yourself, hey, I can do that! So there you have it, the progression in my mind from shirt I love with a cow that has a flower crown on, to me trying to make a flower crown๐Ÿ˜ถ! If you're in fact in the market for a flower crown, this tutorial's for you!

Supplies needed: Floral wire, floral tape, scissors(not pictured), pruning shears and 3 bundles of flowers(for a relatively small head).

First,  I took the floral wire and wrapped it around my head to make a crown the size of my head. I overlapped the ends of the wire to make it a bit sturdier.

Next, I took all the flowers and lopped them off with about 6 inches of stem remaining. Then, I cut them off the "branches" with multiple flowers per stem into singular stems with about 2.5-3" of stem remaining.

Now, I will say, I have an abnormally small noggin' so I if you or whomever you are creating this for has a bigger-than-childl-size-head, you'll need more flowers. I was scrimping at the end to finish it.  So, next, I laid out the three different flowers in "piles" and sorted them to be wrapped with floral tape. I had the least of the spray roses, so I alternated every other bundle with them. Then, I just grabbed a bundle and started wrapping the stems with floral tape, at least a couple times up and down to ensure they will stay put.

After the bundle of flowers is secured with floral tape, I found that cutting a strip of floral tape about 8 inches or so worked easier that trying to wrestle with the whole roll. I attached the flowers to the wire crown with the strip of floral tape I cut. *TIP* when wrapping floral tape, you need to pull it kind of tight, it's stretchy, sticky stuff. So, when you wrap stems singularly, or you're trying to attach them to something like a floral crown, you need to pull the tape taught in order to secure the blooms to whatever you're wrapping them against. I went in a clockwise direction and laid them at an angle to help hide the next flowers stems.

Below, is a time-lapse video of me making the flower crown. It took me about 30 minutes in real time, although, I do have some experience with flowers, so I'm not too much of a green horn when it comes to arranging. I hope it's helpful and at least one person tries a flower crown! They're so fun!

Now, on to more important things, like my outfit! This is probably one of my most favorite outfits to date, sans flower crown.

Like I said earlier, the shirt came from Amazon, linked here. It's a ladies cut, and I have broad(er) than average women's shoulders, because I've lifted weights my whole adult life so, thus, I got a large. If  I got a medium I'd be like Chris Farley in Tommy Boy, ๐ŸŽถfat guy in a little coat.๐ŸŽถ  Also, because I wanted to be able to breathe in it, and women's cut shirts are very different than unisex. This shirt is comfy, it's not the comfiest, but over time, I can tell she'll soften up nicely. My one and only beef with this shirt, was the color options, I would have loved a heather grey only because *pit stains* I sweat like I'm going to the electric chair 24/7 so a light grey shirt is always a gamble with me. But, I can always layer it with a chambray button up once it gets a bit cooler to disguise my pit stains. ๐Ÿ˜…See folks? you're getting' the unfiltered, raw truth about Kate over here.

Now, lets talk about this skirt! It's also an Amazon find, linked here.  A steal at $17.99! I'm always leery of skirts on Amazon, especially when the description is clearly in a foreign tongue. Mainly, because asian sizing is way different than my south easten, biscuit lovin', child bearin' size hips. BUT, this gamble paid off! I'm wearing a size small, it has pockets, which duh, we love by now and the cute little tie front detail is pretty darling. Give me all the vertical stripes on my lower half please๐Ÿ™‹ vertical stripes elongate and slenderize, pair it with black and all I have to say is, Thank you Jesus. It has a pretty long hemline, I'm 5'8" so for all my petite/shorter buddies out there, you would want to wear some wedges or some kind of heel with it. It is a silky kind of fabric which I wasn't expecting, so, if hearing the swish of silk is a trigger for your PTSD that takes you back to the late 80s and early 90s in your wind suits, this may be an issue. Otherwise, you'll be fine!

My accessories, we're not the star of the show, but I'll share them here. My necklace is old as the hills y'all. I think I got it from TJ Maxx. But I'll link something similar here. My earrings you can't eve see, lol but they are major cuties. I got them in a three pack from Amazon, linked here. They are hexagon shape in natural stone-ish colors, i'm wearing pink ones here (you'll just have to believe me). I got my trusty apple watch on, which honestly, I just didn't take off, #oops. Last, my sandals, which you can't see again ๐Ÿ˜‘ are knock offs of a DUMB EXPENSIVE studded, Valentio pair. I got these at Nordstrom Rack a couple years ago, but I'll link similar pairs here

Welp, folks there you have it! My easy, peasy DIY tutorial on flower crowns and the cutest little cow shirt I've ever seen. Have a great Sunday!
